Any place this hauntingly beautiful warrants a good legend. Here’s how legend explains Halong Bay: A dragon descended from the sky and spat pearls into the water to protect Vietnam from foreign ships. The pearls transformed into islands; the ships turned away. Dragon wins.
“Pearl” is right, when it comes to these island rarities. Sixteen hundred of them dot Halong Bay, Vietnam, and most are uninhabited and untouched. Booked a 3 day 2 night all inclusive trip through my Hotel for $50 US. Was a ball ended up with a good crew and that made all the difference, our guide was a good bloke as well. Did not start well though, our bus to Halong city was “broken” so we ended up cramming into a couple of cabs. But the boat we ended up on made up for it, was pretty nice and the food was good. The scenery on the bay was amazing lots of Karst stacks rising up out of the ocean and we wound our way through them on the boat. Visted a cave and a small island with a beach before we parked up for the night. Had a good sleep on the...

Halong Bay is such a beautiful place, I’ve never seen anything like it before! There’s over 2000 small islands there but they say they only have 1969 because that’s the year that Ho Chi Minh died.
The tour guide on the boat told us a few of the names – fighting cock, Kissing couple and big fish (the islands look like these things). We visited the Song Sut caves which was cool (check out the pictures) and did some “karaking” (kayaking- the tour guide’s english was hard to understand!). We kayaked for about an hour and explored some of the caves and floating villages around the bay (jas did...

“Ha Long” means “Bay of Descending Dragons”, though prior to the 19th century this name was not recorded in any document or archive. When mentioning the present-day Quang Ninh Sea or Ha Long Bay, old historical books often referred to them by the names of An Bang, Luc Thuy or Van Don. Not until the late 19th century did the name of Ha Long Bay appear on a French Marine Map. The Hai Phong News, a French newspaper of the time, had an article, Dragon appears on Ha Long Bay, reporting the following story: In 1898 a sub-lieutenant named Lagredin, captaining the Avalanse reported...
